Beware of extended life (Orange) antifreeze

Please be aware! Many late model vehicles use “extended life” (orange) antifreeze in the cooling system. This engine coolant (orange) is highly susceptible to sludging when it is exposed to air. The system should be watched closely to be sure it is full at all times. If the system continually looses coolant have it checked for leaks right away. Running these vehicles low on antifreeze will expose the coolant to air and it will begin to produce sludge. The sludge in turn will plug the cooling system and eventually cause overheating.

LEGALITY ISSUE REGARDING REMOTE START SYSTEMS “VEHICLES RUNNING UNATTENDED”

January 28, 2004

We have contacted Marty Conboy, Omaha City Prosecutor, to ask him to clear up the confusion created by the contradictory messages conveyed by the KETV Channel 7 and the KMTV Channel 3 news segments in December 2003 and January 2004.

The KETV news story stated that “under the law it makes no distinction. Any car left running without a driver behind the wheel can result in a fine.”

The KMTV news story quoted Mr. Conboy as saying, “unless your car is ready to drive, running, sitting on a public street, you won’t get a ticket.”

Jones Automotive, Inc. talked to Mr. Conboy on January 26, 2004 and he gave us permission to quote him as follows:

Mr. Marty Conboy, Omaha City Prosecutor, “just as I told the reporter from KMTV Channel 3, ‘unless your car is ready to drive, running , sitting on a public street, you won’t get a ticket. The police simply misread the statute.” “In addition, it is my understanding that a vehicle left running after being remotely started would not be ‘ready to drive’ and therefore would not be subject to a ticket.”
